Rude Mechanicals are

Miss Roberts, Jowe Head, Marina Young, Jeff Bloom and Cos

“Bands this good deserve your attention”
Sean O: Resonance FM

The Rude Mechanicals often get compared to The Birthday Party/Nick Cave, Tom Waits, Captain Beefheart, Frank Zappa, The Tigerlilies, early Roxy and Syd Barrett. Their style has been called Post-Punk, Swamp Blues, Dark Cabaret with the word psychedelic often thrown in. We particularly liked a recent suggestion - Psycho Cabaret. Creating a sound that Tom Robinson describes as “wild, wicked weirdness... a little bit Flying Lizards, a little bit Native Hipsters and a great deal like nothing you've heard before..." (Tom Robinson BBC6 Music).

Miss Roberts - Lead Vocal, Harmonica

Jowe Head - Critter synth, Concert Zither, Kaossilator, Thumb Piano, Percussion, Vocals, Electric Guitar etc. etc..

Jowe Head (Swell Maps, Television Personalities, Infernal Contraption etc.) is currently our all purpose - multi instrumentalist; adding sonic delights from home made acoustic instruments and mini-synths to the mix. He’s also found the time to write several songs for the band.

Jeff Blom (Television Personalities) - Drums

Cos - Guitar, Backing Vocals, mixing

Co-writes and arranges most of the music. He’s performed with Anne Pigalle, Alternative TV, Maps Collective (Swell Maps), Infernal Contraption, Sexton Ming, Candide and Anarchistwood performs solo with self made electronics and prepared guitar, works with dancers and performers, notably LAMP, Rockinghorse and Lingering Games.

Marina Young - Bass

Marina has been playing bass in bands for quite a while, including Jowe Head’s Demi Monde and Angel Racing Food. She is a frequent collaborator in many ensembles including The Long Decline, The Unreliable Witnesses, Spew and Candide.

The mysterious and ethereal Miss Roberts along with her Rude Mechanicals is a whirlwind of strange songs, sounds and looks. Miss Roberts is the leader and her flamboyant persona has become the look of the band. She has put together an act that combines surreal stories, poetry and songs. The full band is a 5-piece, but happily capable of adapting to more intimate settings as a duo, trio or quintet.

Long term collaborator Cos Chapman (Alternative TV, SPeW) has been with the band since inception - co-writing and arranging most of the music - currently playing guitar live, but in the studio often adding keyboards, samples and percussion as well as engineering and mixing. Jowe Head (Television Personalities, Swell Maps etc..) is currently our multinstrmentalist adding sonic delights from home made acoustic instruments and mini-synths to the mix. He’s also found the time to write several songs for the band - amazing considering all the projects he’s got on the go!

Drums from Jeff Bloom (Television Personalities) and bass from Marina Young (Demi Monde, The Long Decline) form a mighty rhythm section, Marina’s melodic skills and Jeff’s jazz touches moving the band further away from straight rock, but keeping a strong, danceable pulse running through the songs.

The band has featured in Bizarre Magazine, is played regularly on Resonance FM, and had national airplay on the BBC6 as well as being picked up Irwin Chusid - Journalist and DJ of New York's WFMU Radio and Everett True in New Your’s Village Voice. Other collaborators include Mark Perry of Alternative TV and Sexton Ming.
